ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Whale Watch Cabo is a dedicated whale watching company based in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico. Our specialized company focuses on small groups dedicated to non-invasive tours that support Whale conservation and research. We offer small group whale watching tours and have grown to be a leader in educational, sustainable and responsible Whale watching operations in Cabo San Lucas. Our efforts include our Cabo San Lucas Whale watching tours, Cetacean research projects here in Los Cabos, research throughout Mexico as part of several organizations and internationally as members of several Cetacean Conservation and Advocacy Organizations. Whale Watch Cabo and its staff of Whale Naturalists work to support furthering our understanding of Cetaceans, improving Whale Watching standards locally and internationally and participating in Whale Research and Conservation.

An internship volunteer position with Whale Watch Cabo is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in sustainable tourism and marine mammal research.

We would like to invite students to propose their own research projects which they would like to fulfill with us, we are open to ideas.

PROGRAM DETAILS

TASKS and RESPONSIBILITIES

We seek performance-driven, dedicated individuals for medium – long-term internship based in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Interns/volunteers must be available 5 days a week for an average of 6 hours per day, for a minimum internship of 2 months. Days of the week will vary.

  • Collecting data of Humpback Whales and other cetaceans on our 2.5 hour whale watching tours
  • Assisting guides and monitoring passengers
  • Photo-identification matching of humpback whale flukes and/or dolphin dorsal fins
  • Data entry and archival tasks
  • Participation in outreach events and other tasks as needed

COMPENSATION

We offer $200 usd per month financial support during your internship. No housing is provided. Interns/volunteers are responsible for their own travel and living expenses. Basic low budget accommodation can be found close to the marina however there is also public transportation available.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applicants must be authorized to legally remain in Mexico, if they are not Mexican citizens. We accept interns/volunteers from all nationalities. Normal entry via tourist visa allows you to stay up to 180 days in Mexico.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Possess a university degree or be advanced undergraduates in biology, zoology, marine biology, ecology, or related field
  • Or have work experience in a related field
  • Available on an 5 day per week basis for the entire season (Dec – April)
  • Available for all field work
  • Have a mature attitude towards research
  • Proficient with computers and data entry; specifically using Macintosh
  • Have a strong work ethic and superior organizational skills
  • Be independent, adaptable, and a fast-learner
  • Strong communication skills – comfortable speaking to guests
  • Able to collect and process data in a detail-oriented manner
  • Able to speak, read, write English fluently
